Bilgola Beach

The backyard of this iconic beach‐side dwelling house was home to a grove of Cabbage Tree Palms, Tree Ferns, a mass of understorey plantings and an enormous fishpond. As amazing as it was, it was not overly functional for the owners and their family. See some of the before photos here.

We were engaged to redesign the backyard to include a swimming pool, a generous area of turf and a covered entertaining and cooking area. The Cabbage Tree Palms form an endangered plant community in this suburb, so we were limited with the number we could remove. This fact really drove the location and size of the swimming pool. Only three Cabbage Tree Palms needed to be removed (which were replaced) to allow this stunning swimming pool to be installed. Much of the existing plant material was relocated to the surrounding gardens in the backyard and throughout the rest of the site.

The lean‐to roof between the dwelling house and the swimming pool is in keeping with the existing dwelling house with its timber detailing and terracotta tiles. It is the perfect spot to cook a BBQ and entertain right beside the swimming pool.
